Prescribed Burns
The foundation is constantly working on projects restoring the property to its native Florida habitats. One such effort is the periodic controlled burns through different areas of the farm.
Naturally occurring fires play a major role in forming and maintaining many of Florida’s natural communities (habitats) such as pine lands, sandhills, grasslands, and wetlands. Native plants and animals in these areas develop special characteristics making them well-suited to survive in areas regularly exposed to fires. Controlled burns are often used to remove overgrown vegetation and provide plentiful food and open space that wildlife need to thrive. The nourishing grasses and wildflowers that burst from the enriched soil provide forage for many species of wildlife.
