This past December, the Holloway Foundation hosted a Native American Christmas Celebration at the foundation barn, featuring special guest Jim Sawgrass, founder of Deep Forest Historical Native Programs. A native Floridian of Muscogee Creek descent and a living historian of the southeastern tribes of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, Sawgrass captivated guests with an insightful presentation on the history and lifestyle of early Florida natives. Attendees explored a museum-quality display of Native American artifacts and watched demonstrations on how indigenous people used natural materials to craft essential tools and goods. The event also featured an atlatl demonstration, showcasing the traditional hunting weapon used by Native Americans.
In addition to this rich cultural experience, guests enjoyed a special visit from the Florida Audubon Bird of Prey Center, which brought three of their ambassador birds. Attendees had the unique opportunity to observe and learn about an Eastern Screech Owl, an American Kestrel, and a Barred Owl, gaining a deeper appreciation for these incredible birds and their role in Florida’s ecosystem.
